Fitbit Blaze Review

So it’s been about a month and a half since I’ve had my Fitbit Blaze and figured I’d write up my thoughts on it. I have had numerous Fitbit products over the years (One, Flex, Force, Charge, Charge HR, Surge, and now the Blaze).

The first thing I noticed about the Blaze is how low profile it is, especially compared to the Surge. It is a bit wider than the Surge but for an average male wrist it fits well. I have heard some woman say it is too big, however this comes down to personal preference.

The touchscreen is much more response than the Surge model, and the added color to the display is a great step up in my opinion. The screens are intuitive and easy to navigate (Today [displays your stats when you swipe up on the display -> Exercise [gives you multiple options] -> FitStar -> Timer -> Alarms -> Settings).

As for the basic features of all Fitbits, I have found the step tracking to be quite accurate compared to previous models. And in fact when I ran a half marathon I didn’t use the connected GPS (more about that feature further down) and the distance the Fitbit calculated based on the number of my steps multiplied by my stride length came out within .1 mile of my Garmin Forerunner 620 running GPS. I have also found it is more accurate in picking up steps when you are is not swinging freely, it won’t pick them all up but it at least picks some of them up compared to older models that would have a hard time even getting 10% of those types of steps.

As with all other Fitbit models it uses a built-in barometer to estimate the flights of stairs you climbed. What this means is this metric won’t be 100% accurate since it is based off air pressure and not actual elevation. For instance, if you went for a walk outside on an extremely windy day you would probably have an inflated count of flights of stairs for the day. Since this metric isn’t used in the calorie burn equation it is not that big of a deal to me.

Connected-GPS: this is the new feature of the Blaze compared to the Charge HR (no GPS of any kind) and Surge (built-in GPS). To use this you must have your tracker paired to a compatible mobile phone, and use an exercise mode that uses GPS. The GPS data actually comes from your phone and syncs after you complete your workout. Some people don’t like the idea of having to carry their phones with them on runs so this is something you will need to consider before buying. Overall I have found the GPS from my iPhone/Blaze combo to be accurate enough.

The map on the left is the Blaze/iPhone GPS and the right is my Garmin Forerunner 620 GPS unit. The Garmin tracked 3.71 miles. The Heart Rate data is was also pretty close:

The Garmin uses a chest HR monitor and picked up a high average HR (169bpm vs 162) than the Blaze which uses PurePulse (wrist based HR). Overall, considering the price point difference between the two the HR discrepancy is acceptable to me. I have found the Blaze HR data to be quite accurate for all day tracking, however it is not as responsive to quick increases in HR.

For all-day tracking and easy to moderate steady state cardio exercising the Blaze is a great product and will meet most peoples needs. However, if you are looking to use it for strength training, interval workouts, or fartlek runs it will most likely not be the best tool for you.
